Portia Munson, Bruised Bra (1993) PAFA - Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
By A Mystery Man Writer
Description
Portia Munson, "Bruised Bra" (1993). Oil on linen, 13 x 14 in. (33.02 x 35.56 cm.). Art by Women Collection, Gift of Linda Lee Alter (2011.1.145). © 1993 Portia Munson. Portia Munson's paintings of singular, isolated objects originated from and engage an "obsessive looking" in her words. Munson's process entails "isolating a specific object and allowing its individual meaning to resonate" as it leaves a trace in the world. A cotton bra might lose its sexual implication and become pieces of sewn fabric scrunched up by use.
